We are excited to introduce you to London based contemporary jeweller Emily Kidson, who has over 20 years experience as a jeweller and has even had a career as an art librarian.
Emily explores colour and shape through precious and non precious materials including Formica, which she discovered whilst working in the Central Saint Martins library as their art librarian.
From that moment on she began exploring this material to its full potential, creating her signature combination of 100% recycled silver, gold and colourful Formica. Her use of laminate, and specifically the brand Formica, gives her work a mid century feel. Traditionally used in kitchens and furniture she breathes new life into this practical material. She adds extra details with the addition of wood, paint, precious stones and Keum Boo.
Every piece is made meticulously by hand in her London Studio based in Cockpit Arts. She uses an array of techniques including silver inlay, traditional jewellery methods and more. You will notice that Emily’s work is finished to perfection, every element is thought through inviting the wearer to explore the piece front to back.
Emily’s main influences come from unusual places like old industrial buildings, and the shapes and textures found in tapered chimneys and water towers.
Our Spring Showcase is on until May 31st we have a few pieces available online and many more in our Clifton Gallery. The Spring Showcase also features work from Rosita Bonita and Sally Collins.
